Join us for talks by:

Catherine Lucktaylor

Catherine is a ceramicist whose contemporary hand-formed Raku ceramics blend her African ancestry with the Cornish landscape. She has a degree in ceramics and has been a member of Earth Kilns, a collective focused on Raku and smoke firings, kiln building and the exploration of low-fired ceramic techniques.

In 1999, Catherine received a Travelling Fellowship from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, which took her on an exciting journey through West Africa and Brazil, researching traditional religion and sacred art. The expedition not only facilitated a profound connection with her Ghanaian heritage, but also led her to reuinite with her Ghanaian father. Upon her return, she curated the impactful Sanctuary exhibition, supported by Arts Council England.

After moving to Cornwall in 2009, she started focussing on her ceramic career. She established her large rural studio near Penzance and began offering Raku courses, nurturing aspiring artists while showcasing her ceramics through galleries and her website. Recently, Catherine has incorporated her training in Ancestral Lineage Healing into her practice and hosts healing arts retreats and grief rituals interwoven with creativity and ceramics.

Ria Poole

Dr Ria Poole is an Egyptian painter and ceramicist, living and working in West Cornwall. Her work is intimately situated in the Cornish landscape, where she paints en plein air in all weathers, sometimes in hard-to-reach locations to enable her to capture the most interesting perspectives. The expressive abstraction of her studio work is playfully unbound, embracing a range of techniques and media, celebrating colour and painterliness. Ria exhibits widely across the UK and is represented by New Craftsman Gallery (St Ives), Wave 7 (Wadebridge), Aubergine Gallery (London), Hayden Gallery (Marlow) and St Ives Contemporary. Her paintings have been shortlisted for various art prizes, including Creates Emerging Artist Award 2020, Black Swan Open Art Prize 2019, and Artists and Illustrators Artists of the Year Award 2018. She is a member of St Ives Society of Artists and an associate member of Penwith Society of Arts at Penwith Gallery.

Ria is also an Innovation Consultant, Psychologist and Postdoctoral Research Fellow specialising in the development and evaluation of complex interventions in public health, the environment and the creative arts. Ria works with organisations and businesses to design, implement and evaluate their innovative products, services and working practices to address various social and environmental challenges and create meaningful and sustainable impact.
