Still I Rise

Youth Of Colour Empowerment Project

The “Still I Rise” Youth Empowerment Project was launched during Black History Month 2024 and continues to grow in strength. It is designed to inspire and equip young people of colour with the skills, confidence, and resilience they need to thrive in today’s world.

The Programme

Participants will take part in a series of engaging sessions designed to equip young people of colour ("BAME")  or with global majority heritage with the tools, knowledge, and support needed to navigate and address race related experiences. Through the programme, children will build confidence, resilience, and develop the strength to stand tall against adversity, while discovering how to shape their futures positively.

The importance of this initiative is urgent, especially given the rise of the far right and increasing racial tensions  in the UK. Events over recent years have highlighted persistent inequality and the challenges faced by young people from diverse backgrounds. Now more than ever, we must unite to stand up against racism and ensure that those who experience it, especially our young people. it is vital to empower children to rise above adversity, find their voices, and feel supported in navigating a complex social landscape.

For children, this programme offers the opportunity to:

  • Build resilience and self-confidence

  • Explore their identity and heritage in a supportive environment

  • Learn practical tools for handling difficult situations and standing up for themselves

  • Develop communication skills that will benefit them in school, at home, and in their wider community

  • Connect with peers who share similar experiences, fostering friendship and solidarity

Parents are welcome to leave their children for some free time, or to run errands, but we also encourage family participation. Parents who have joined their children in previous cohorts have found it highly valuable for:

  • Understanding the context their children are living in and the challenges they face

  • Developing skills to have open and honest conversations as a family

  • Learning from their children, practicing active listening, and gaining insight into their perspectives

  • Exploring empowering stories from Black history and celebrating role models

  • Becoming strong advocates for their children’s growth and wellbeing

  • Strengthening family bonds and building community connections

If you are a young person aged 7–18, or know someone who would benefit from this transformative experience—whether individually or as a family—get involved! Let’s empower the next generation to stand strong, rise up, and lead the way toward a brighter, more inclusive future.

The programme is FREE, and dates, times, and locations (likely Truro) will be agreed upon by the group. We are always open to suggestions on how to make the programme even more impactful for young people and their families, so please share your ideas freely.
